Best Ukuleles for Beginners
Which Ukulele Should You Buy? A teacher’s honest guide for students and parents
One of the most common questions I get from new students (and especially parents) is:
“What kind of ukulele should we get?”
The good news: you don’t need to spend a ton to get a great instrument. Over the years, I’ve tested a lot of beginner ukuleles—and these are my go-to recommendations for students. Whether you're shopping for a child, a teen, or even yourself, here are my top picks by category.
🥇 My #1 Recommendation:
Kala KA-15S Soprano Ukulele - $65
If you’re looking for a great first ukulele, this is the one I recommend most. It’s affordable, easy to play, and built to last. Perfect for young beginners or anyone starting fresh.
Other Solid Beginner Options:
Kala Makala Soprano Ukulele - $59
Reliable and fun to play. A nice introduction to soprano-sized ukes.
Donner Concert Ukulele - $62.99
A solid starter uke at a budget price. Great for early learning and casual players.
Kala KA-15C Concert Ukulele Bundle - $119
This bundle steps it up a bit: better sound, plus it includes a strap and case. Great for students bringing their ukulele to lessons or summer camp.
For the Serious Student or Performer:
Martin T1K Tenor Ukulele – Natural - $499
This is a high-end instrument for serious players. Likely overkill for a beginner—but if you want a stage-ready uke that sounds amazing, this is it.
QUICK NOTE: Where to Buy
I personally love ordering music gear from Sweetwater because of their awesome customer service. But you’ll also find good models at Amazon or Guitar Center.
